The P501 is a multi-purpose "tracking toolbox" that has a microphone preamp with an astonishing 72dB gain range and a 60kHz bandwidth. Line-level signals and instruments can also be connected to the device, via a jack socket on the front panel of the module.
The unit is equipped with Safe Sound’s ‘peakride’ compressor circuitry, which “uses multiple side-chains in tandem allowing for very musical dynamic control of source material”. The result of this is a very transparent sound that “evens out levels in a very musical way without robbing the sound of life”. The P501 also has a limiter that is versatile enough to be used as a peak protector for tracking, and also a brick-wall effect for drums and the like.
